My family has been known to dumpster dive (with head lamps), and drive big trucks wherever they go because, "you never know what you will find on the side of the road". You could say that we're just a bit looney tunes, or you could also say we're a little bit obsessed with good deals and finds. Either way, what you SHOULD be saying is how much you wish you could be a part of my family, because, we're all pretty awesome.
Over the weekend my mom, aunt, and sister came to visit me and new bride Jendy for a thrift shopping day of fun, (yes that's totally a thing)! My sister, not being a big thrift shop fan, had a few stipulations...must.have.coffee, time limits, and snacks. Stipulations were approved, truck was arranged, and the journey to New Jersey began!
Oh yeah, and that two hour drive...it went something like this...
Our first stop was a shop that I had drive past countless times, but never wandered in.
I totally judged the book by its cover, and OH how wrong I was...
I honestly had no idea how HUGE it was, and no idea how many gems I would find! The overwhelm hit us as soon as we walked in.
We made our first pass through the racks (and racks and racks), and decided to find the fitting room for round 1.
Problem was...there were no fitting rooms.
How in the world are we supposed to try on this pile of pants without a fitting room?! After thinking and planning with carts overflowing in the middle of the store, we decided the best option was to find long skirts from the racks, and just pull the good old locker room trick of slipping pants off and on from underneath a skirt.
Problem solving masters.
Except for the fact that there was a 2 way mirror right beside us, men looking at electronics to our left, and hundreds of people trying to squeeze by us...it worked like a charm. Oh yea, told you it was going to be fun.
My dear friends, this is why my family is awesome. We had such a covert mission going on, and no one was the wiser (or maybe they were...but hey). One person tried on, another put back on the hanger, a third took from the first reject pile to try on, and a fourth started returning clothes to their racks.
Like a well oiled thrift store machine...or something like that...
We could not stop laughing at ourselves and our decisions. We took a break for lunch, and decided that we needed to GO BACK to this same thrift store. Yes! It was that big! We finished the clothing racks, went back to our corner "fitting room", and settled on some chairs, consoles, and other furniture items.
Cue the pick up truck! Also...cue the thunderstorms rolling in!!!!
We quickly loaded up the truck, but not well enough, because on the three mile drive back to my condo, two of us were hanging out the cab window to hold the furniture in place around turns. Nothing but laughs, a few new outfits, and good stories.
As I sit in my new thrift store arm chair and reflect on the good times, I really am so thankful to have such great women in my life. Women who can laugh with you (and occasionally at you), support you, and raise you up all at the same time.
YOUR TURN
Who in your life would try on pants under skirts with you? Who do you have in your corner, for better or for worse? I wish for you a family and friend circle as good as mine.
Have any hilarious family stories? Share them below (please let me know I'm not the only one with looney stories like this?!)
All the best in love and life,
Chelsea B.
